Default Hmf Problem

Has anyone had problems with their 04 Predator hitting the rev limiter?We put on the sport series slip on.The jetting is as close as we can get.We are at 185 on the main,2.5 turns on the air/fuel mix,pilot stock,with the Rath intake.We could probably go 180 on the main and still be safe.We are having a problem with the bike maxing out the limiter and popping/sputtering on the very top end of the power band,with the throttle pegged.The local dealer says he has heard of this before.HMF tech is saying the same.The dealer is saying we could change the limiter for another 100 rpm,but so what,all that is going to do is move up the rpm and not cure the problem!Just curious if anyone else has had this problem.Any cure?

Default Hmf Problem

A lot of the time when you put on a less restrictive exhaust, your engine can rev easier and bounce off the limiter faster. It sounds like your sputtering may be the limiter doing it's job, so replacing the CDI with something that will get you another 1000rpm may solve the problem. I believe Polaris upped the stock limiter 500rpm or so on the newer model years for just this reason. The other alternative is to gear that puppy a bit taller. That way you get more top end speed out of each gear and are less likely to hit the limiter.

Default Hmf Problem

I assume you aren't talking about the actual motor popping when hitting the rev limiter....this happens because it is somewhat "stalling" out, due to wanting to climb the rpms higher and not being able to.


With your mods, I'd suggest a 172.5-175 main jet, a 50 pilot jet, and the needle on the 4th clip.....that should get you a lot closer, you seem way too rich for your setup. Just keep doing runs at full throttle, then immeadiately shutting it off, and checking the plug.....look for paper bag brown.

Thanks for the replies.We are going to have to wait for the weather to clear out and warm up again.We are in the 40's again so that does not help either.We're not going to give up that easy.I have checked for leaks,can't find any.Will try the carb tuning again when we get a chance.We ran alot of main jet setups,and this seems to be where it cleaned up the best.What do you think for a gear if we go that route?Front I presume?

Default Hmf Problem

Just for reference I have a Yoshi slip on with just a K&N drop in and left the jetting stock..have no problems anywhere in the powerband.
