Default winch problem

i have a 2000ib worn winch
i currenty took out my atv and tryed the winch and the thing is totaly backwards
when i press in it goes out ect
when the wire gets out about half way the out is out again ect.
there is a big rats nest in side the winch and i was just wondering if there is a simple way of fixing this without taking it all apart.(the winch has a stell plate covering it)
thanks

Without going into a lot of detail, it sounds like the rats nest is your problem. Hook the cable to somethins that won't move (car, tree, etc). Place the winch in the freewheel position. Start the atv and put it into reverse to try to undo the rats nest. It may not be easy. Good luck.

On one end of the winch, the electrical wires are attached. On the opposite end is a rotating "****" which when rotated, will disengage the winch spool from the winch motor (puts it into neutral). This allows the cable to be freely pulled out, without using the switch.

Sure is. I can ride right through town to get to the trails. Or a quick run to the local 7-11 store.
