I always thought they were the vent holes for the clutch housing. When I took off the side panel the clutch cover had a slim hook shaped vent going to it and the vent tube going to the holes at the side of the tank is a larger round tube that connects to the base of the engine. Are both of these vents for the clutch housing?

Here's what I think.

The "slim hook shaped" tube is the PVT exhaust.

The intake is under the gas tank right by the engine air intake.

Hey Tim, how long have you had your Sportsman? I just got a 97 Explorer 500, it's the same bike as your with out the pod. Anything I should watch for?

Keep a eye on the brake pads and when you have to change them get a heavy duty pads such as EBC (I think thats the name). Also grease the bike regularly and the front hubs have fluid in them,I did not even know there was fluid in them and one was almost dry.Because you do not have a Engine Braking System if you encounter a steep long hill before you go down it put it in low range and it will help hold you back or you can put it in reverse and tap on the gas to control your decent, it works geat I just found out about that one.
