Sportsman Timing & Float questions
#1
I have posted a time or two in the past with questions on this sportsman that I am working on. Its a 2001 500HO. I am ready to drive it into a tree! Basically, it idles well, and you can drive it around for a while if you are easy on the throttle, but if you punch it it starts to bog and sputter real bad, and then after that you can't accellerate at all, it just bogs.
I checked the carb multiple times, cleaning everything & inspecting. I ended up discovering that the center lobe on the camshaft was nearly gone completely, so I replaced the camshaft and center rocker arm thinking that my problem was taken care of. Well, I wasn't so lucky. It seems to act the same. I checked the level of the gas in the bowl and it was about an eighth inch above the seam between the bowl and the top of the carb, so I adjusted the leve a bit and now it is about a sixteenth above the seam. That seemed to help a little bit, now I can start it up in nuetral and rev the **** out of it all I want and it runs perfect. I can take it out and drive it slowly and it works fine, however when you punch the throttle, applying more load to the motor, it just bogs and spits and sputters. But then I can stop and put it in nuetral and rev it as much as I want and it works fine. I dont' know what the hell is going on!?
So, to my questions. Can someone tell me the correct way to check the timing on the sportsman? It should be fine because I didn't move the sprocket, but I just want to check. WHen I line up the T on the flywheel with the point on the hole in the housing, the notch in the sprocket on the camshaft is parellel to the cylinder, pointing upward. I believe this is how it is supposed to be correct?
Also, For adjusting the float level, all you need to do is bend that little tab that supports the float needle right?
If anyone know the correct setting for the mixture screw, that might be helpfull too.
Thanks alot guys, any bit of help here would be greatly appreciated!
