Default 05 Sportsman HO 500 Performance Mods

Guys...give me some ideas on simple performance mods to enhance my 05 Sportsman 500HO. I am not looking to turn it into a monster but just a few simple things that would make me be able to raise an eyebrow or two among my riding buddies. If you have experience with specific items that you are pleased with provide me with the manufacturer & cost of the mod.

Thanks.

The best mod you could do is spend $299.00 for the 06 800efi drive clutch and replace youe existing one. Otherwise what the guy above said. I reccommend the Heel Clicker for the clutch kit, but again the best thing would be the 800 clutch!

Well, I'm not much of a gearhead but I understand what a pipe & filter could do...explain the benefits of changing out the clutch.

Thanks.

Yes, what's the big difference in the 500 and 800 efi clutches? Is it just different springs/weights? Is it a different diameter? I'd be interested in something like ... I had my first real flat-out run last night (albeit into the wind) and the most I could get out of my efi was 55mph @ 6240rpm. I had always thought that the polaris 500's were faster on top end than my old Warrior, but from this .. apparently not, since I got over 64mph on my warrior on the same stretch. Perhaps the wind and windsheild were working against me, but I'd like some more umph!

I am glad that you posted that Warrior...thats about what I get out of mine. And quite frankly I was pretty dissapointed when I found this out. My 500 Magnum had no trouble with 65mph.

Anyway...I have a filtre on order now some of you guys give me some suggestions on a pipe. A couple other things that I ordered today were the headlight conversion kit & the reverse override lockout kit - both from Quadavator...my dealer didn't know what I was talking about when I phoned them and asked about it.

Hey Sean,

Did you get your machine from Coastal Marine ? Wherever it was, did you inquire about the units for the odometer? They can be set for either km or miles, and I asked the guys at coastal, they said they were set for miles. I have a sneaky feeling that it's actually km though. Most other people seem to be reporting much worse fuel mileage than what I'm getting. I hope it is in miles though.

Yea I got mine from Coastal...quite satisfied with the whole purchase transaction as opposed to my dealings with Fun-N-Fast on 2 new sled purchases. My quad is set in miles as opposed to kilometers...I haven't bothered to change it. I have never checked on the mileage that I get as I generally do not fill up at the pumps. I am kind of obsessed with ensuring that the gas for all my toys & outdoor gas powered stuff has only stabalized fuel so I always put the stabalizer in my gas bottles when I fill them.

OK, let me see if i can answer everyone questions and concerns. First off the 05 and newer sportsman are geared much lower than the 04 and earlier. They changed the gearing to handle the larger tires, and additional weight of the new design. I can get 58 out out my 05 500 on level asphault giving her all she has, and no extra weight other than the machine and myself, and i am about 160lbs.
Now, the 06 800 clutch is even better than the 05 800 clutch. Also, the 2006 sp500efi, sp700, sp700efi, and sp800efi all have the same clutch as the 06 sp800efi. It is a Team drive clutch assembly designed for a much lower and stronger engagement. It will engage the clutch and belt right off idle, about 1200rpms, where all the 05 models and 06 450/500carbs will engage closer to 2000rpms. makes for a much strong take off! Most people with older machines are upgrading to the new clutch. It is Polaris part # 1322555. You'll also have to change to the 2006 800efi belt with this primary clutch.

Oh, so no benefit for me as I already have the 2006 500EFI ..

So is there any way to get more speed out of these things? And what about airbox mods and exhaust on the EFI ... does that require reprogramming?
