98 Polaris 500 Sportsman Explorer ?????
#1
Hi,
There is a 1998 Polaris 500 Sportsman Explorer that needs trans work in an auction near me; and i was wondering what is it worth? I am in canada.
Also what are the possible problems with the tranny? I have emailed the auctioneer but haven`t got a response yet.
Are they good quads?

Sportsman is what it is.The explorer is a 400.The tranny could have various problems from
a worn bearing to a broken shift fork.In my case I got a whole used tranny out of one with
a blown engine for less than the price of new parts.Search ebay for a tranny and see what
they go for so you have an idea of what you will have in it when/if you buy it
A man in my town has a 97 sportsman for 2800 and that is too much and it runs and drives
and all the clutches are brand new.A sportsman running and functionable is worth anywhere
from $2000-2500 depending on condition, miles, ect.A "mechanics special" version is probably worth about $1000-1500 at the most but it all depends on how many people want a fourwheeler that needs a new $1200 transmission.

OIC, so you would have to replace the whole tranny? You can`t just replace parts??
By tranny they couldn`t mean clutch could they?:-D
So if its a broken shift fork what needs to be done new shift fork or new tranny?
Worn bearings, how hard would that be to replace?
thnx

If I found a used tranny in good condition I would spend a little extra for it than hassle with
taking the tranny apart and replacing parts and if something is tore up than other stuff you dont know about could be bad too.Parts for the transmision are expensive.I needed a shift fork and forward gear. That would be $200 for parts.i bought a good used tranny for $205 and
saved me the hassle.I just bolted it in and off I went.If you take it to the dealer I wouldnt mind them taking it apart but then you have a big labor bill as to if you still have them do it,
it would take less time and money for labor to just bolt a tranny in if you bought a used tranny.Do you understand? The parts can be replaced BUT like I said, its usually cheaper to
get a whole used tranny. It depends on whats wrong though.

this is the reply i got.
That bike was a nice bike a few years ago. I can tell you that I
started it, it turned over just fine. It goes into Low gear but struggles
(belt/chain not driving) It'll catch for a little while, then loose it
and start smoking. The 4x4 worked as far as I could tell. It doesn't
want to catch at all In Reverse or High gear (grinds). The ignition is
torn apart, but it starts in a pull or two manually. I had it looked at
and they agreed it needed tranny work. Other than this I don't know.
Ignition, trans, and any part that would be melted or damaged by that
what would you think the problem is?

HMMM.If the engine smokes then it needs atleast a topend job.About the tranny.Could be a gear, shift fork or clutches.I dont think it is the clutches though.Sounds like it is junk. You are probably looking at several hundered atleast in parts.I wouldnt give over a thousand for it and if you really want it than buy a used tranny and everything else new.I dont really have an anwser on the tranny though.

Oh, i thought it was saying the belt smoked from slipping?
So you think it would be trash?
I might phone up the polaris dealer just to find out how much new parts are.
Maybe if it goes cheap enough it would be worth getting??
