Default Shaving scrambler 400 head and maybe a port job, how far should i go?

Hey guys, I need to re place my headgasket tommorow, I was wondering about getting the head shaved. I have 2 heads, one the has alot of nicks in that is on it now and one that is coming in tommorow that is like new. How much of an inch or mm is a good amount to take off to raise compression? I have a clutch kit, hpd pipe, boyeson rad valves, K&N filter, 60 over cyl/piston. I was thinking about getting it ported aswell, How far over should i go and in which ports? I was also taking into consideration a 38-42mm carb to go in it aswell. Any help would be great, oh and i was also wondering about the ricks aftermarket cdi, What exactly does it do? and how well does it work? Thanks alot, Brian

Well you would have to send the cylinder head to RCR or HPD to have it shaved. As for the porting, you will have to remove the cylinder and send it off as well, asnd tell them if you want a race or trail port. I would say unless you get a big bore kit on a race port or plan on running alky a 42mm carb would be too much. A 38-39mm might fit your needs a little better. Just my $.02

Hey Rick I sent you a PM, I thought I could take it to a machine shop and have them machine it, There are people near me that have been doing porting on engines for many years, I thought they could do it with no trouble. Thanks for the input, Also any word on that cdi? Thanks alot guys, Brian

A good way to create a situation for burn downs is to have a 60 over piston and just shave a stock head!..............good way to end up with a squish that is way off.

Some good advice, would be to take it all to a good shop and let them set it up for you

I agree with zbart1, A local shop may have done alot of engine's, but were they Polaris engine's? Each company has there own porting specs for what a specific engine should be ported to. I would send it off and have it done right because youe engine in NO plaec to take short cuts.
