Default 1986 Trail Boss... questions

I just bought one of these and gotta about 1.3 million questions but I will start with a couple - I have found some parts online [ebay] but they are for like an 88 or 89 - will these parts fit an 86? I am looking for a carb kit and a coil because i am not getting any spark...

any help is great!!

!985-1988 except late 1988 are all Generation I quads and most of the parts are interchangeable, in fact the Generation I 1988 parts are preferrred because they are the latest updated version of the parts. Late 1988 and 1989 are Gen II and are substantially different. But the carb is just a typical Mikuni and if you take to an atv or even motorcycle dealer they can get you the right kit.

the carb kit and the coil are the parts [right now] I am most interested in - so those are good as long as they are not 2nd gen 88? the 89 coil "looks" the same but that dont mean a whole lot.

thanks

Coils are more generic than other parts and even an 89 might work but it is a gen II and they changed a lot of stuff that year. If it looks and mounts the same and it is not too much money try it.

right on - I am going to scoop that thing up for cheap and see what happens... but I finally got my service manual - so tonight I can tear into more and break all kinds of stuff!!

I am sure I will have more questions soon.

Thanks again!

If you got the service manual on cd that includes the parts manual you can check with a dealer on the part number you need and they will have the updated/superceding number that fits your application. You will be surprised how much stuff is still avail from Polaris if you can give them a part number-------->assuming you find a decent dealer of course.

heres whats funny - I took the plug out and checked it for spark and it shocked the hell outta me [i'm not bright] then I got it to start and then it went wide open [another thread] ... anyway, now I have lost spark again? can a coil "be going bad" and sometimes spark and others? a coil is $95 and I will prolly buy one, I just wanna stay cheap when I can...
