me again with the 86 TB 250 - when I take it down the road it tops out at about 15mph and makes a clanking sound? runs fine to that point and have run it quite a bit. seems like the sound may be coming from the front of the exaust? it kind of cuts out when I am going along... is this top speed on this beast?

Stendori is right my 87 tb 250 goes about 45 top. Sounds to me like your driven clutch may not be shifting or your exhaust is plugged since you posted that you felt the machine had excessive exhaust noise. Also, are you sure it is shifting into high range when you place the selector lever in that position?? Just some thoughts to check.

as far as I know it only has fwd and rev... but I have a primary clutch problem that I think needs to be replaced - it will go into gear if you get it rolling then put it in gear.
I didnt know how it worked, but are you saying that it will "shift" into another gear and since the clutch is messed it wont, so it is cutting out? looks like I need to get the clutch fixed before next spring, I wanted to wait - will driving it like this cause any damage? as long as I dont rev it all to hell?
is there a place on here where local mechanics are listed? we should add that... dealers are evil.

Unless yours is different than mine your shift lever should have four positions---h-l-n-r not necssarily in that order on the linkage bar. Each position has a detent that the rod rests in so you can count those if the letters have worn off. As for the clutches, I am talking about the secondary clutch which shifts or opens up as the primary closes. If you have not inspected/disassembled either I would do both or have it done as based on your previous posts this machine had little to no maintenance on it prior to your purchase.

trail blazers have forward, netrual, and reverse. the shifting xler8ion is refering to isnt a gear as you think. it is how the clutches work together. like when your going along and go full throttle the secondary clutch will what we call back shift allowing the engine not to bog. now it could be the secondary spring came unhooked or maybe it broke. if the engine will rev up and not go very fast then i would say its in the clutches for sure.

Well stendori and mudjive it is confession time. I checked the specs on the 85-87 trail boss and the 85-86 came with f-n-r only. In 1987 it was upgraded with high and low forward. So I was wrong and it appears the clutches are the most likely problem. They did have clutches on the 86 right?-----jk. There now I feel better.
