Hi I have a 99 Sportsman 500 and was wondering if anyone had ever hooked it up so that highbeam switchs both the lower and upper lights on. My father thinks i will cook my alternator but I am pretty sure it wil handle the added power drain.
I was also wonder what the major mod on the new HO motor was and if it is possible to convert and older sportsman easily.
Thanks

I have just done what your asking about. Its real easy. First take off your front rack, the hood, and remove the 5 screws in the headlight pod. Next at the left hand lower headlight find the green wire inside of the black plastic sleeve and splice a wire into the green wire about 3 feet long and route it up through the bottom of the light pod. Next splice a wire to the yellow wire inside the light pod that goes to the back of the main headlight, this wire can be about 1 foot long. Take these two new wires and hook each to its own screw on a two poles switch (you can pick up a switch anywhere). Mount the switch and reinstall the pod cover, hood, and front rack. Thats it. You can turn on your low beams as normal, then flip your new switch and all three work. The same is true for the high beam position. Now you actually have 3 options for lighting. As for the power drain on the battery its not even a factor. I have my lights wired as above and I have also added PILOT DRIVING LIGHTS that are made for automobiles mounted next to my lower stock ones with there own switch and I do run all 5 lights at the same time with no problems. Although I don't think you would want to sit at an idle all night. Hope I helped you out. If you have any questions email, also if you need to know how to add the driving lights just holler.

There are several ways to make this mod. Just do a search.

And yes, you can change the carb, cam, and do some clutch work, and have the HO.

gdr,

I like the way you hooked your headlights up. I was thinking of doing it with the diode but I didn't like the fact that I had to have high and low hooked every time I turned the high on.

Thanks

Thanks for getting right back to me.
I wasn't worried about battery drain what I noticed is that When i rev my motor it makes the lights brghter. On My friends piece of junk 99kvf 400 it doesn't do that.
Thanks again for getting right back to me.
99 sportsman
