Default 1997 Polaris 400l 4x4 starter

What is the easiest way to change starter and any special tools, and how do I check starter bendix/drive for condition when I am in there? Thanks

The easiest way to access the starter is to remove the entire clutch housing to acces the bolts which hold on the starter. You can get to the bolts from underneath, but it is a PITA for the clutch side bolts. You also have to take off the flywheel cover on the other side of the engine to remove a couple bolts near the bendix. When the starter is off, it is a good idea to pull it apart and check the condition of the brushes inside. They commonly go bad after years of use.
