Default sportsman 700 carb trouble

Help!!

I bought a used 04 700 sportsman with the carb in April. After the first few couple rides with my kids I begain to notice lost of power at lower rpms. The bike would esitate, backfire and sometimes just stall. It would not start up again untill I waited for 15 minutes. I took it to our local Polaris dealership and he gave me the story of carb problems with this bike in different temperatures. We change the pilate jet from a 47.5 to a 45. this did not help. I finally changed the fuel filter and put in an automotive fuel filter. This appearently worked for the rest of the summer, but last week I took the atv up to northern Ontario for some hunting abuse. The bike begain to act up in the same old fashion.

My question is do anybody have a setting for these stupit carbs that will work in both cold and warm weather. I remember my buddies in the 80's with the old Big Reds. They didn't need to adjust their carbs for winter and summer riding. What gives with Polaris and their carb?

Second question: Does anybody know if the Aaen flatside carbs work on these bikes in all conditions and do they work at all?

Thanks

I would check the carb boot that is between the motor and carb for cracks. This could cause an intermitten vacume leak causing the symptoms you have described. You have to pull the boot cause most of the time they crack on the bottom side and you wont see it. Or you could pull the air box and remove the rear carb mount, start the motor and wiggle the carb around. If the motor changes sound the boot is most likely cracked.

Thanks for the info. I pull the carb and then pulled the boot based on your advice. Son of a gun!!! there was a crack in the bottom of the boot. I am ordering a new one tomorrow.

Thanks again

Also double check the owners manual for proper jetting, think it should be somewhere in the 155 range. Unless your up in altitude, then you may be close.

I run a 167.5 main and 50 pilot with nice results. Without the white Bros pipe and dual head pipe/800 intake- a 160 or so should be fine Stock was a 155 and a 47.5. also moved jet needle to #4 position. What type of Airfilter you got? go K&n or equal! make sure that foam cushion isnt blocking intake snorkel that will cause symptoms like you have also.
