Default need help with tire spacing

buddy just called me and said he just put on his front tires: Mudlite XL 26x9x12's on the stock rims of his '06 sportsman 800 and there is only 1/4" clearance from the tire itself to the strut.. he's pretty worried about this, i told him to put some spacers in.. is that normal? anyone else mount these like him and find the same thing? and what did you do?

thanks.

I have 8" wide Mudzilla's, with little room too. You could put spacers, or run it like it is. The worse that would happen, is mud will collect and tear the $6 boot on the tie rod end.

the stock rims/tires are very close as it is so he needs to get aftermarket rims or use spacers to gain the room. i have xtr's 9" on front w/ itp rims w/ alot more room then stock was.
