My sons 450 is in the shop. It is brand new and was on its second ride when the belt began to slip and we had to tow it back to the truck. Initially the dealer said the belt was slipping and that was all that was wrong. I said it was more than that. After they changed the belt thay realized the rear/driven clutch was not working properly. The little plastic peices inside where melted. The dealer said my son was riding in high gear too slow causing the belt to slip, heating the rear clutch, and causing the plastic "cogs" to melt. He was not doing that. I said there is something wrong in the tranmission that is making extra resistance and making the belt slip. We went to the shop to pick it up because the dealer said it was ready and we found that it takes both arms of a grown man to move the shift lever. Before we took it in, it took more muscle than any other polaris we had to move the shifter, now it is almost immpossible. The dealer Knew about the shifter problem when he called and said it was ready to pick up but doesnt have a clue why it is doing this. The head shop mechanic and his men are great guys but they dont have a clue what is wrong and from what I understand they have taken the transmission apart and can not find anything wrong. Does anyone here have any suggestions or past experience with this problem? Thanks.

we have 450 miles on my wifes w/ no problems as such.once ina while she wont put it gear all the way and it will grind a bit. i do have her use l.range alot when were going thru heavy mud and i beleave the book says to use l.range under 7 mph. the engine doesnt turn up enough to cool the belt if you ride slower in high range but i dont know how many miles you have but 2 rides doesnt seem like that many. i would want to see the belt and see were its burnt. if you get fine mud (silt) on the belt w/ water that will cause slippage to its cleaned.

Is it under factory warranty? If it is, you can take it anywhere for a warranty repair. Tell the dealer it is not right, either fix it or I will take it to someone that knows what to do. Obviously the shifter linkage is binding somewhere. I usually have a harse approach when I think that I am about to get the shaft. Bottom line, you paid your hard earned money for there product. Hold their feet to the fire! We don't have to get snotty all the time, we just need to expect quality service!
