Tire choices for a 06 Sportsman 500 EFI
#1
I am wanting to get a better set of tires for my Sportsman , I have had 2 big rides in a row where I have had flats . It came with the PXT tires.
What can I put on the Sportsman size wise without running into interference problems and what brand tire ?
It is used for trail riding in rocks, mud, creeks and hill climbing
The tires are on it are PXT 26X8X12 Fronts and 26X11X12 Rears and most everything I have looked at is a 26X9X12 frontand worrying about any clearance issues.
I probably will stay with the stock steel black wheels

I am new to atv's but I just got a 2006 450 it has the stock carlise tires and I beat the hell out of em with no problems. I took it through rocks, sticks, logs, briers, mud, rocky streams, and even plowed my way through the woods making my own trails hittin the side walls with trees. Maybe you just had some bad luck.

I have not bought any tires yet for my X2 but everyone in all my forums seem to be in agreement about "maxxis bighorns" for trail and rock climbing. That is all they use on the Paiute Trail.

the big reason for all the flats(myself included) is because the pxt's are only a 3 ply radial which is pretty soft for good handling and traction but not very sharp rock friendly. i beleave alot of the aftermarket tires are at 4 ply and better. bias is also stiffer and seems to be a little more puncture resiten.

What narrows your choices is your decision to stay with stock wheels and the factory offset. You?ll be fine in back but going to a 9 wide front on stock steel may rub your outer tie rod end(s). It depends on the brand, some will and some won?t but all wider tires will ride closer to the tie rod ends unless you go with a wider offset wheel.
Radials are definitely my choice. Bighorns in rocks, ITP XTRs for everything else. Depends on the terrain you like to play in.
