I think I saw that article. I get to browse through mags while the wife goes shopping. The store owners don't seem to care because of how much she spends (just kidding dear)
Anyway, if I have it right, the Xplorer had more power, a smoother ride, and a more effective 4wd system. However, it lost the shootout because of its chain drive, 2 cycle engine, and grease fittings, not anything to do with its performance. I have over 3500 miles on mine (haven't driven much lately - it is 3 degrees outside & I ain't that crazy) with zero breakdowns. I grease it & lube the chain religiously. I am still on the original chain, but don't mud very deep very often. If you go with the new one with shaft drive to the front, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
If you don't like the idea of having to grease it & lube the chain (plus adjust it every once in a while), go with the Kodiak.
If you can tolerate the maintanece, you will not be disappointed with the performance of the Xplorer.
