Guys, The battery on my 2003 Sportsman 500 HO was going bad so I replaced it. The machine has 750 miles on it. At first the blinking battery icon on the spedometer was gone until I turned on the lights then it blinks. If I turn off the lights it stops. I also just noticed that if I use the winch the thing blinks. Needless to say when I am drawing power down the battery icon blinks. ANy thoughts? I am beginning to get frustrated...

Did you check your rpms at idle?

 

is that the only thing you have running(drawing power)? it should be idling at 1100 rpms. check the battery for volts to make sure that the charging system is working. if the rectefier is bad it wont charge the battery right.

 

funny u bring this up but my batt light has came on , and stayed on the last few time i have started mine .if i shut it off and re-start it is fine .... i am hope it only the batt i have another 4 yrs on my warrenty But i am sure the shop will keep it for 3 weeks and it will probably snow w/ they have it. i plow about a 1/4 mile drive....soooo iguess i will change the batt and go from there.the 400 has a very small batt like a motor cycle.i wonder if i can get the same size but like gel w/ more cca....HELP!!!!!!!!

 

Hey guys thanks for the responses. The light (icon) stays on whenever the lights are on even if I am not at idle. I guess I will have to go through the tests in the service manual, I only hope I don't have stator problem. I hope it is something simple perhaps like the rectifier or voltage regulator. I will start by recleaning the terminals on the cables and battery and check all connections.

just a thought for ya but if your using your winch alot like when plowing your running strickly off the battery and the charging system isnt designed to keep up w/ alot of use or draw from the batery in which the volts might be dropping enough to trigger the batt light.
