Most of the Polaris motors have an adjustable stator plate. You can advance or retard the timing with out an offset key.

What is the best timing for a sportsman ? I havent got my book yet, I might try and jet it bigger, I have to do some checkin on it first, I would like a lil more get up and gone out of it with out the noise of muffler/header and I am worried bout a cluch kit, I do use it for bring out deer on the back from the hollers, and don't want it to come over on me with a cluch that kicks in to hard, I ride with another sportsman and we are even on speed, he's only 47 years old and I hate not being able to faster then that young wipper snapper, my other friend has a 500 Bombardier, no problem there,,, I only need a little more speed, I will find it somewhere, My top end is 0k, I just want to get there faster,,,,,,

I've heard a few guys advance them a couple degrees. It's not real hard to do. If you notice any temp problems or detonation sound take it back to what it was. It won't hurt to advance it though.
