I just bought a next to new 2001 Scrambler 400. I want to change the crankcase oil and the manual (from under the seat) does not say how much to add. In other words, what is the oil capacity? The manual gives the tranny capacity, the counter balance capacity, etc. I know it is 10W-30. It can't be much, but I do not want to under or over fill. Can I also assume the fill bolt is located right in front of the recoil? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.

The crank case does take oil. It takes 10w-30. What I did the first time was drain and measure how much came out and that is what went back in. If you happen to overfill you will be ok because once the bike runs for a few minutes all the excess oil will come out the overflow hose.

Thank you all for the info. I now understand - hopefully. I took care of filling the counter balance oil in the small dipstick - after I drained it from the small bolt at the bottom of the engine - about 3 ounces. Now, since I also drained some more oil from the "crankcase drain bolt" from the front of the engine as shown in the manual, where do you add this oil? I am scared to death to fire this machine up now!!! I am really starting to miss my old Honda CR250 (quick and easy oil changes!). Thanks for any more advice to this 40 year old.

As long as you have the 3 oz of 10/30 in the counter balancer - so it checks ok on the dipstick. [dont thread it in] Your in good shape. The big plug up font is an over flow for the counterbalance. You may occasionally want to drain the crank case "Leftover" oil. This is unburnt premix oil. This plug is underneath, and is on an angle. Same size as the CB plug 10mm wrench.
Good luck and Leter eat!

When you consider what we put our machines through, using a synthetic oil like Mobil 1 in your counterbalancer can really help. Best of all, since it's such a small amount, a quart of Mobil 1 lasts a long time.
