I took my xplorer out for the first time just to play. I tried to cross a creek thinking this thing would just climb right thru it, but it didnt. Put it in reverse, and there I was stuck. Ended up useing a come along. Anyway, Im sure alot of it had to do with tires, but as I sat there spinning, all of the tires were spinning except the left front. Should all the tires lock in and spin or is this normal? Is there a way to test if the 4x4 is working properly? I was going to put it up on jack stands to see if they all spun, but figured I best ask someone smarter than me first.

Thats normal. You have a "three wheel drive"[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img] Thats where a locking diff comes in nice[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

 

last time i knew it was a AWD not a 3 wheel drive. all wheels spin.

 

Your right stendori,"AWD" means all wheel drive, period. Check the wires going to the coil. And check the fluid in the hub. Check about 3 or 9 oclock position. Plate in hub might be worn out also.

 

Its a 97 explorer. Hes never going to have power to all four wheels at once. If you can some how stop the front wheel thats spinning, the other one will spin.

I found the wires are broken at the front right wheel. Can I just tie them back together, or do I need to replace something. I read in the book about ohm readings, so I didnt want to mess anything up.

 

So you have a locked front end all the time? I was trying to say, it will transfer power back and forth. Thats why i said to stop the spinning wheel, and the other one would take over

 

they both spin all the time in there able to spin. if 1 is getting traction the other will spin at the same speed. i would think you can just reconnect the wires to fix it.
