Default 98 scrambler 400 throttle cable, Dealer, or do at home?

my throttle cable sticks a little when it gets cold out and has for years. It did it when my buddy had it and it does it now. He bought a brand new cable from polaris, and i have it here at home. I am pretty good with tools and working on things, and i have had this quad a part a few times, and rebuilt the transmission my self with great results. My main concern about changing the cable my self, is getting the adjustment correct on the oil pump. The last thing i want to do is burn up my motor due to lack of lubrication, or excess lubrication. any one done this at home? or have experience with it? I am not going to bypass the oil system, and mix the fuel. I like being able to stop at any gas station and put in pump gas when ever i want to.

Count the number of turns on the old one when you remove the it and install the new one with the same number of turns. Some use how many flats on the bolt. Which ever you chose you should be fine. One other good idea is to premix your gas and oil the first tank or two to make sure everything is working as it should

Have you tried lubing your cable? Sounds like you have moisture or corrosion in there. Google the "cable care kit", comes with the cable lube tool and cable lube.

the cable lube does work pretty good. not to big of deal to change if you pay attenion to how things were.

I have a 96 Srambler 400 2 stroke 4x4 and was wondering if there is a suitable substitute chaincase lube other than the $13.99 a Qt. polaris chaincase lube. Like maybe a 80/85/90w gear oil?

i would say change it yourself, i did mine and it was fairly easy. it took me about 40 minutes (1st one) to change. didnt even take the carb off. carefull taking the carb apart. keep an eye on the orientation of the small parts inside. make a note of it. if yer handy then save yer money and do it yourself.

when i changed mine it was easy, just take the oil pump cover off and "unhook" the cable,(its about that easy)then unscrew the top of the carb and remove the slide slowly, inside the slide there is a slot that the end of the cable goes in,with a "clip" holding the cable in the slot, the big spring is what puts tension on the "clip" just remove and pay attention to how it went, there is pretty much only one way it will all fit correctly,if you can do a tranny you can do a cable!
