I managed to get some time to work on this today. First off, on the front sprocket I did have totake the whole brake assembly to get to the front sprocket. It wasn't really that big of a deal, but just a PITA. The sprocket was a mess. It only had two teeth left and about 3 that were very warn down! Iam amazed that it had heldon so long. Then Igot the chain and rear sprocket off. The rear sprocket is in good shape,but I'll change it out. All in all it took about 2 or so hours. I had a close call with a ratchet strap while compressing the rear suspension, but other than that it went really well. The front sprocket has (had!) 12 teeth and the rear has 42. Should I keep it about like that? I have no idea on the chain. That Ebay auction is looking better and better to me now.

 

so why did u have to ratchet strap the rear shock down u should have only had to loosen up the chain and pop of the master link off and off comes the chain and then u should have been able to take an put a pair of snap ring pliers on on the front sprock and pop off the snap ring and reach up and slip off the old sprock and then revers the prosses with the new sproc....thats how i did it anyway

 

I had to ratchet down the rear because the rear swingarm is in the way of the bolts that hold the brake set up to the farm rail. It was easier to the the bolts loose without anything in the way. The ratchet strap decided to crap out on me and went flying by my head!

 

ouch that sucks.....close call u couldnt have een able to just reach up and take the snap ring off it sounds to me like u are puttin ur self through alot more work then u need to do....just mi 2 cents

 

i dont think my ft sprocket took more than 20 minuts or so... sounds like alot of extra work mine, is a 99 though..

 

i know thats what i was thinking i think the last time i did mine it took me maybe 45 mins in all to get it all back togeather with 2 people doing it

 

Just remember that the older models don't have the rear brake on the axle, it is up by the engine. I also really took my time. If I had tried to go faster it probably would have taken me less time.
