Default Polaris On Demand all wheel drive: how does it work?

Hi,

I am looking at buying a 2007 Polaris Hawkeye ATV. I know Polaris has an "on demand" 4 wheel drive system that engages the front wheels when needed. My question is does this only happen when 2 wheel drive is selected? Is the ATV "locked" into 4 wheel drive when 4 wheel drive is selected?

In other words, is there power to all 4 wheels when in 4 wheel drive or does it just use the on demand system (or is the on demand system only active in 2 wheel drive mode when the going gets tough)?

Does anyone know the top speed of the Hawkeye or the Horsepower and Torque ratings?

Thanks in advance for any help.

When in 2wd it will be only 2wd. When in 4wd mode it is still in 2wd unless the AWD system detects a rear wheel slip than it engages the front wheels, when the rear wheel stops slipping it returns to 2wd again.

If your in 4wd mode and flying down a gravel road you are still only delivering power to the back wheels only.

Thanks for the reply. That is EXACTLY whatI wanted to know about the on demand system. I was hoping to be able to "lock" it in 4 wheel drive, but I'm sure the system will be fine.

Any idea on the top speed of the Hawkeye? Would it maintain a speed of 30 - 40 mph on a gravel road/trail?

Does the on demand system work well in snow?

I searched this site and found out that the Hawkeye has 17HP at the crank and can get up to approx 40 MPH (64kms/hr). Can anyone verify this (Hawkeye owners)?

Polaris AWD is got to to the best 4X4 system on the market when it lock all 4 wheels lock you can throw it into AWD on the fly.
I've been blasting down a trail at 40 see mud ahead click it to AWD hit the mud and i've got AWD to back me up 100% seemless.

THe AWD is awesome in snow too. I've done the same thing zipped along see something ahead i might get stuck in click it's in AWD bring on the snow.
and it turning off when it's not needed is nice because these big ATV's drive like a tank when 4X4 is on. so it makes it easy to steer when your not needing all 4 wheels runnin.

No idea on the Halkeye top speed but i'm sure 30 is very do able.

My '06 2wd Hawkeye
<-----------------
will do 48 or 49 on a hard/level/flat, carrying my 320lb butt. I see 45 MPH pretty regularly.

The speedometer said 50 today briefly, for the very first time, on a lil' downhill. I've talked to a couple of other Hawk riders, both lighter than me. Everyone seems to get about the same top speed.

LOL Even my old 1988 350 Yamaha Big Bear could do a little over 40 mph!

Default Polaris On Demand all wheel drive: how does it work?

Hmm, its interesting to see the explainations
of how the AWD works on the Polaris. I have
heard others say the same as you TLC, and not
to contradict (cause I am a ATV newbie ~1 yr.)
but when I engage my AWD I have noticed
all four pulling without slippage. In fact just
recently I was tearing up my back yard then
I noticed all man its in AWD after switching
back to 2WD, different feel, lighter, more
peppy, and no digging effect. There was
no mud/water whereby it was slipping.
So it appears as if all wheels were in work?
(Maybe I'm wrong?)

Like to know the answer here, ohh BTW I
am running SP 450 (06). Please advise!

Mine will do 30 all day long and will do 40 without a problem. I'm 225 lbs and the power is just fine.
