Hello, have a Sp 500 2k. Very happy with machine, however would like to have more power. Recently rode a 01'sp 500 HO, and I was very impressed. Is it possible to convert my sportsman to something similar to the Sp 500 HO. Have heard of people replacing cam, rejetting carb, and changing clutch springs. My biggest worry is that these mods may cause engine damage to my machine.
Any suggestions/comments will be appreciated.

Many people have converted their pre 2001 SPs to HO with no problems at all. The differences between the two machines are a Scrambler cam and 40 mm carb. The 2001 SP (and all 500 Scramblers) also have a HD crank to withstand the extra strain but most guys don't go to that extent. Also some minor clutch work (springs).

tjschim1,
Ther are a number of things you can do to give you the same similar results you felt in the SP500HO. I have a 98 Sportsman 500 that I have put a K&N power Kit (carb jets, K&N filter System), Pipe, and just recently placed the New Clutch Springs in my bike. These are just a few things you can do to improve the Horse Power on you SP500. Another small thing is the Spark Plug.
I ride with alot of guys some with SPHO and I can tell you I have just as much power as they do if not more and I would say i have a little more then they do. Hope this helps you the total cost for what I replaced was approximately $300.00 and well worth it.
