throttle sticking!

02 700 twin.
just ruined the damn bumper on my "show car".
anyway.
you can pull the throttle lever back to idle, but the motor seems to spin down all on its own, like the throttle cable has no effect on RPMS.
you rev it, and it just hangs and hangs and eventually falls back to idle.
what could it be?
i lubed up the cable after unscrewing it at the handlebar.
still moves just as free as it did.
the actual throttle lever isnt sticking. im puzzled.

mine does the same thing! but we got lots of snow up here, you dont. Its gotta be that the cable is either hanging up somewhere or stretched . Will check back if I figure it out. Watch out for trees!

i was directed to look for a missing carb return spring on the body of the carb.
i didnt think there was one.
maybe the internal mechanism the cable is held on is spring loaded?
i was told that if the spring breaks, that the thumb lever spring is not strong enough by itself to compensate.
ill look further when it isnt so dark(and cold) outside.
