dumb question why does recoil starting fry the speedo?

I did the bypass and it was working for awhile but now it is not. Should the AWD light be on when you do the bypass? Mine is not on.

Does anyone know if the light on the speedometer and the AWD have to be on to get the AWD to work. I think my speedometer is completely dead.
