maintainance on a predator 500? to help decide on quad
what kind of maintainance is there on a pred? I assume it will be similar to my friends 06crf250r and 04yz250f
I think oil is changed every 5-15 hours- how expensive/quality oil should you run? $5 a quart? $10 a quart?
How often do you have to check the valves? evefry 10 hours of riding? or 20 or 30?
Do you adjust them everytime you see they are a bit off, or at a specified time like every 30 hours each time? (would every oil change be a good time to check them?)
How hard is it to adjust the valves if you own a shop manual??
Do you have to be careful that parts dont fall into some place where you cant reach it? like springs or bolts?
Is it a pain in the @$$ to adjust valves?
How long does it take to adjust the valves?
How expensive are the tools to do it if i want to do it myself?
And is there anything else i should know about? like adjust the cams/valve timing? or is that done only once a year?
everything that has to be only done once a year (about 200 hours of riding for me) will be done by the dealer, but i dont want to bring the pred to the dealer everyweek to do stuff that has to be done every 10 hours........
is there anything really bad about the pred for 2003? magazines say missed shifts/false neutrals, but everyone on this forum denies that....... but i think i could jsut buy tranny components off newer models to get better shifting...... i heard powershifting is impossible, but that is good because then i wont mess up my tranny when i get tempted to powershift
sorry that this is such a long post- but i really need to know this, and i dont really trust magazines all that much..... anymore.......
if the pred turns out not to be right for me, should i go with a z400 or a 02-04 rap660 with widened stuff??
thanks guys

03 preds can have tranny issues(major)......other than that, they are fairly good.
Change oil, when it gets black(about 10-20hrs). Use good oil.....Bel-ray....or Amsoil.
Adjust valves, when they need it......the less revving you do, the less they will need it. I'd say around every 50hrs......
Join www.predatorowners.com Search around.......there is a TON of info on there, and also a "sticky/how to" about adjusting valves.
