Default 500 efi 2006 won't idle

my 500 fuelie won't idle as soon as you get off it dies. It will restart easy but will only stay running if you sit and feather the throttle. Any ideas as to what could be wrong.

maybe the ecu needs to be reflashed. there is no way of adjusting it w/out the computer. just make sure theres a little play in the cable on the throttle so it doesnt hit the throttle override. any wires unhooked anywhere?

It sounds similar to a problem I had a while back. Check your throttle cable tension adjustment right on the handlebar just outside of the throttle box. It is tough to pull back that rubber jacket, but what happened to me was the locking nut backed off and allowed the cable to vibrate loose. It ran fine when I was riding and held the throttle, but as soon as I backed of to let it idle it would die. Tightened it back up and reset the lock nut and it's been fine ever since.

Mornin stendori, Thanks for the info,,
ndfarmer, I think ki4bar called it,,
Sounds like your cable stretched, adjust the cable, page 116 of your owners manual,,

I'll third the motion on the throttle cable adjustment. I think it is your best bet and an easy fix at that. If you pop off the throttle housing top and the two brass contacts are touching then that is your problem.
