Default my first bike.....700 sportsman 2003

hi guys , i just bought this bike and i'm very dissapointed .......when going thru a trail with friends , every time i let off on the accelerator , she backfires ....the bike has a flat spot at first push then works great ,lots of power , but again when i let off on throttle she endlessly pops thru exhaust ....now can anyone tell me what the dam trouble is with these bikes ? the dealer told me it's natural and to just drive it ....the bike still has warranty on it 16months left ...and i think they just don't wanna honor it ....any suggestions ...? ty

No, that is not normal. Almost sounds like it is too lean. Is you air filter in place? Anybody jet it? Fuel filter clean? I hate to say it, but it doesn't sound like the dealer knows too much, or maybe they just dont want to help you. Hang around a bit, someone will be by soon to give you some help.

If it is under warranty why not take it to another dealer. I have an 05 700 EFI and mine has never backfired, hiccuped, sneezed, nothing. Sounds like they just wanted a sale, without properly addressing the problem, which could be in the timing. How many miles/hours does it have on it? Brian

My buddies 500 99 magnum was doing this (might be a different set-up) and there was an adjustment that could be made inside the throttle housing on the handle bar. The dealer backed off on something inside the box and the back fire went away. My memory is not so fresh, but I think it had something to do with the reverse rev limiter or something to that effect.

I do know the issue was the same that you described, backfiring only when letting off the throttle.
Ihope you get it figured out.

Thats not normal mine never backfires.

check these, may create a lean condition...

The front exhaust donut (NAPA part # 31360) at the Y-pipe exhaust manifold wears and may leak.

I have replaced the carb boot/adaptor (p/n 1253415), the rubber gets weathered/dry rotted bad on some and may crack through.

Check the slack in the throttle cable, should be very little when you press the throttle, the adjustment is about four inches from the throttle in the cable. If thats not it, it's too lean , make the dealer rejet the carb since it;s under warranty.
