Default polaris 400 xplorer water pump, pump shaft

I have a 2000 polaris 400 xplorer. Water pump was leaking took pump off. The shaft where the pump goes on has grooves in it. Is this the way it should be?

It should be smooth as a babys bottom. If you've got grooves the seals will just keep getting wrecked. Not a cheap fix though. If the grooves a minor and you put some new seals in you might be o.k. for a little while.
