Default 99 Xplorer 400 2 stroke

I just bought this machine for my wife. Ive been fighting a starter nightmare for 2 days which is now resolved. What a headache, Anyway, Went to start it, and it started right away. Good deal right? Well thats what I thought, how ever this was with no choke, cold, hasnt been run. And if I apply the choke, it dies. Take it for a test drive, seems to run ok, doesnt have the spunk i figure a 2 stroke should, and it cuts out when I get on it. Where should I look please.
Thanks,
Buk

you mean its flooding out? did you do a compression test on it to see what the psi is yet? check that and that might be why it satrts hard and has no power if the compression is low. pull the plug and see what it looks like to see if its running rich.

It does appear to be a little rich. But is not hard to start. It starts right up without choke. I dont have a compression gauge, but it runs awfully smooth to not have compression. It seems to bog out with I get on it.

It sounds like the reeds are shot.I'd start w fresh gas,a new plug, clean carb, new reeds,go w boyesen power reeds bolt on to stock reed cage save yourself money over v force reeds an rad valve.decarbon exhaust port, expansion chamber, degreaser works for pipe, use carb cleaner and be careful not to scrape or nick the piston if you use a sharp tool.I'd check the compression in it too,not sure what it is stock maybe 125 usually anything around 100 or below, time for new piston an rings.hope this helps.

OK, Please dont laugh, But I feel this is a secret that everyone knows but me. What are these Reeds everyone is talking about. The Repair manual shows a pic but not where they are, what they do, or how the heck I check them.

the reeds are behind the carb on the head. the rubber boot from the carb hooks to the reed cage. the best way to describe what reeds do is. they act like an intake valve

You want 110 psi min in a 2 stoke. Get much lower they still run but get hard starting and have a noticable power loss. I never had a 2 stroke ATV but plenty of sleds, same SH! different pile.

couple things to check before you tear into the carb..make sure your exhaust is not plugged up..there should be a couple clean out hole on the bottom of the muffler..stick your finger in the end of the tail pipe and make sure it isint plugged with dirt.....dirty filter?? try taking the air box off and running without to see if it runs different..... choke sticking, trace the choke cable until you find the boots and try adjusting....the drain bolt on the bottom of the carb gets a lot of wear from vibration, mine had a hole in it..JB welded it....I have found all these on my 400 and they would make it blubber when you nailed the gas
