Polaris 4 whell- drive problems?

My dad has a 96 polaris Scambler 4x4. It runs and idles great while in two wheel drive but when i engauge the 4 wheel drive button it starts to run lousy. It pops while in motion and while idling it kinda lopes. I am wondering what is wrong? any ideas?
