Default secondary clutch problems

I did try a search and couldn't find any info. I've got a 94 300 4x4 with driven clutch problems. It seemed to be bogging but now I've found that the driven clutch is opening too soon. It looks as though the buttons are worn pretty bad but I have no idea of the wear limits. Also, the spring is adjustable (3 positions on the pulley & 2 on the ramp). Will adjusting the spring tension help any?

Any info on the spring settings, button wear, and secondary clutch in general,,, would be greatly appreciated.

the buttons are failry cheap to replace so if you already have it apart and there worn down at all, then replace them. did the spring come out of the holes they were in or did you just want to have a differnt shift rate which in turn will loose top end speed if you make it hold its shift for longer shift out.

Thanks, the spring did come out of it's position but I think I can tell where it was. Looks like middle position (2) on the pulley and 1 on the ramp. I had planned to do some trail riding this weekend and hoped that I could lock it into the lower range for slow speeds. As it is,,, even in low range it has no power from idle but has great top speed. I know it will kill the belt if I ride it as is,,, so if I can't lock it,,, I'll just order the buttons and park it.

O' and should I get a new spring while I have it apart? I noticed that they list a red & a black spring. Mine currently has the red. Is there a major difference between the two?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm a newbie when it comes to the clutches.

Remember to preload the spring 1/3 of a turn during reassembly.

im guessing here but maybe it should be a 2-2 setting in the holes. there must be a reason why the spring came out, wheather it broke or the buttons are that far gone. if your going to keep it long term it might not hurt buying both, buttons and spring, and like dlang said preload a 1/3 turn when you put it back togther. try putting it back together and run it to see if it shifts right. chances are the spring was the problem if it poped out. as far as a differnt sppring, if your stock then sstay stock w/ the spring as well. just my opinion.

I misunderstood your question Stendori, the spring popped out of the holes when I took it the clutch apart. It held fine while assembled. So, I'll just try the buttons for now.

ftwflh, Thanks again for the offer. I'll get back to you on the spring.

How loose is the fit between the pulley halfs? Meaning, mine seem to fit pretty loosely and I'm not sure wheter to replace the bushings or not.
Also, how difficult is it to replace them if needed?

Hopefully I'm just overcomplicating a simple problem. I don't seen any uneven wear patterns and it seemed fine until the buttons died. I'll just install the buttons and hope for the best. Hey,,, if it kills them again because of the bushings,,, I'm only out 9 bucks and a little time.
