Default clutch/belt problem?

My 05 Sportsman 400 won't take off smooth from a stand-still. It seems to be "jerky" (nice term), and unless I really throttle-up. Also, in reverse, I hear and feel a clicking sound from my clutch cover. What could this be? They seem like they could be related.

Default clutch/belt problem?

I'm just gonna throw this out there as I'm sure it would be much easier to diagnose if the person diagnosing it could actually ride it but here goes (and I'm sure you'll get other responses also). Could be the broken clutch buttons or possibly a shieve or belt issue. If you can pull the cover off and check the belt for abnormal wear (may be a lifetime belt but that doesn't mean every one of them is perfect). Also check the front and rear shieves for a groove that may be cut into the shieves themselves (usually in a lot of cases this comes from idling without movement at a dead stop). Broken buttons are a relatively cheap and easy fix as is a new belt but new shieves will set Ya back more than just a few 6pacs! Hopefully you'll get plenty of more replies.

you need to take the cover off to see whats up. hopefully its the simple clutching and not a trans. problem.

Default clutch/belt problem?

Thanks for the input. I failed to mention that the clicking sound from the clutch cover can be felt while backing up, if I put my hand on the outside of the cover. Could it be something as simple as a frayed belt? I'm new to quads, so didn't know how difficult it is to remove the cover.
Thanks

just unbolt the foot well and remove and then remove the 6 or 8 bolts(cant remeber) on the cover and pull cover off. there should be a grind mark where it was hitting the cover.
