2000 Sportsmans 500, rear brake problem
Hey fellas,
picked up a 2000 sp 500 and noticed that the rear brake caliper sticks, it stays engaged after you let go of hand brake or foot pedal. You can pry the pads away from rotor but as soon as you engage brake it closes up and stays there. My question is since this caliper cost anywhere from 150.00 to 200.00 is it repairable? I have not received my repair manual yet so I have not had a chance to really dig into it but wanted to get a heads up as to what some of you may have found with this situation. Any help or suggestions are always appreciated.
Thanks,
jhenney

I take it there is no way to take the piston out and possibly clean it up and see if that will allow it to travel in both directions as it should? I just received my repair manual today so I can see if there is any information in there dealing with this issue. I check a website that has a parts break down and am wondering if one of the items listed under # 4 is what I would need. It is called the Piston, Stepped Bore. Take a look if you can and let me know what you think. I really hate the idea of spending $150.00 for a new caliper kit.

these i found on the polaris page and im guessing this is what you could get to rebuild it- 2201181 PISTON,STEPPED BORE, -2201180 KIT,SEAL,CALIPER,WW i would go to your dealer and ask him for a rebuild kit or how much fo rit. i beleave you can just take off your caliper from the disc and while still hooked to the lines, pump your peadal sevral times (while making sure not to drain the fluid out of the little res.meaning you have to keep filling it while you do it) and it will push the piston right out oof the caliper and then you could check clean, or smooth the piston out and maybe at least replace the seals. just an idear.

Sounds good, need to find a local dealer first. I did pull the caliper off the avt tonight and found that there are no pads left on the brakes. Where there should be pads it is a thick as the metal the pads should be mounted on. Is it possible that the pistons were coming out farther then they are supposed to making it harder for them to retract as they should? Either way I need new pads and I need to find a dealer so I can get some parts to get this back up and running. I will take the caliper to work tonight and work on it.
will keep you informed as to what happens.
Thanks

yep, the pads i would say is most likely the problem. replace them by sqeezing the caliper piston back together. side note; if you have added any brake fluid to the res. then you push the piston bad in to make room for the new pads you might have too much in there so it pushes back in it will want to over flow.

check big buck atv they have brake upgrade kits for our sps i bought one for my 99 500 it comes with front and rear pads and rotors. made a nice differance in braking on my 500. might be a little more work than just doing the rear but worth it besides i would think if your rear is that worn than the fronts maybe worn as well. also bike bandit online has the caliper kits and maybe cheaper than a dealer.
