my 1996 sportsman 500 has some carb issues. I can take it apart and clean it and reassemble it and it will run fine. Then after a while the diaphram slide will only open half way and wont rev out. I have been through this carb 100s of times and am now looking for a new one. can I bolt on the H.O carb? Would it be worth it? Are there and aftermarket carbs out there that anyone knows of? Or should I just go with the stock?

i wonder where an ho has a differnt cam and most likely differnt valves if the bigger or high lobe cam would make the air and fuel mixture so differnt that it would be harder to get the bigger carb tuned in and make it run doggy? just a a couple of questions to condsider.

are you testing this with the engine running and the carb mounted on the machine? I have a 500 HO and mine is doing the same thing. Maybe I have the same problem. What is the thing that opens and closes by the throttle cable called? Is the one that holds the needle that goes up and down supposed to go up and down with the throttle one also??? I need to fix mine too, its driving me crazy not having the power!

yeah, I took the airbox off, the carb is designed to open the slide with pressure changes. Its not mechanical like most. with the airbox off you can watch the slide open and close while in neutral. Mine is only opening 1/2 way not allowing air to flow through. I figure the carb is just wore out...I would like to mount on the bigger H.O carb. I called my dealer and he said it should bolt on fine if I just rejet it. So If I can find a good deal on one thats what I am goin to do...just hoping i could find someone who has made this conversion.....
