Default Draining Crankcase-Question

This may be a dumb question, but the last time I performed maintenance on my ATV, specifically when changing the counterbalance oil, I pulled the crankcase plug, the recoil housing plug and counter balance plug. Can't remember which order but I don't recall anything coming out of the crankcase hole.

This time, I opened the crankcase plug and an ounce or so of oil came out (I had just checked the counter balance oil level prior to draining and it looked fine).

My question:

Is counter balance oil supposed to come out of the crankcase hole?

Thanks

You will have a little oil in the crankcase from what is left from lubing the parts.Normal.The main thing for the crankcase drain is to drain gas out if you happen to flood the engine bad like when a float sticks.

Default Draining Crankcase-Question

ftwflh,

Thanks for the response.

Is the crank chamber contiguous with the counter balance case? One thing I noticed is that with the crank plug out, when I added a small amount of counter balance oil, it flowed right out of the crank plug.

When I put everything back together (all plugs back in place) and added the recommended amount of oil (4.5 ounces), the level looked right on. I am a huge worry wart and just want to make sure all is good.

One more thing, I did a bit of searching on this site and others last night and could not find out exactly what the counter balance does. Anybody know??

Thanks for the help!

Default Draining Crankcase-Question

ftwflh,

After looking at the manual again, I am not sure which plugs I was removing. The diagram in my Haynes manual is not the same as my ATV. Just so we are talking about the same thing, I have a 10mm bolt on the bottom of the case near the starter, I assume this is the CB drain plug, I also have a 14mm bolt under the starter/recoil housing (recoil drain) and a 14mm that comes out of the from of the case, and from one of the other diagrams I just found in the manual in the engine section, does drain the CB?

Are there two plugs for the CB? The oil level in the CB was just fine, so maybe I'm confused with my plugs?

Now I am really feeling confused.

Thanks again for the help.

Scott
