Default No 4wd in reverse

I have a 2004 Sportman 500HO.. I am having problems and I cant find an answer, any help would be appreciated.

Problem: no 4wd in reverse. If I hold down yellow button, not turning off reverse limiter, causing no 4wd.

Symptoms: Yellow botton in high only works sometimes for cycling between rpm/milage,ect.

Neutral symbol not showing up when shifter in neutral position, high/low/reverse symbols are fine.

What Ive tried.. Replacing speedo.. Same problems with new speedo. Jumpering wires for yellow button with toggle style switch, keeping in "ON" position.. Still nothing.. Any ideas???

Do you get an "E" when you are in reverse? If so it is the switch, I have the same problem, but I get an "E" when in reverse and Neutral. Low used to get and "E", but I took the switch apart and cleaned it, then I sealed it back up and at least I get 4WD in Low.

BTW, the switch I'm talking about is by the right foot board, on the tranny. Follow the shift linkage back to it.

The "e" is only on the older speedos, 2003 and back, they changed that on 2004, its a newer design speedo.. There is a switch on yours near the floor board? They must be different then mine

i think he means the switch on the tranny that tells what gear its in which is part of what controlls the overide(yellow button).so you have no awd in any gear? is this an 04.5 0or just an 04?

I have a 2004 not the 2004 1/2

I have 4wd in fwd H & L, just not in reverse.. Again also no N symbol when in neutral..

Is there a switch on the tranny or just a plug with a 4-5 pin wire running off it..

most of them have a little black switch that bolts to the tranny. most likely that switch went bad so it doesnt know its in reverse. just a guess.

There are two plugs that plug into the tranny, I didnt count but maybe 4-6 pins each. I unplugged them both, did a quick inspection and plugged them back in. I was plowing snow and the 4wd in reverse worked intermittently, mostly more not working then working. The "R" is showing on the speedo so im guessing it knows its in reverse.

I see that now.. Only thing is my speedo does show the "R" when in reverse, so I would think its sending the right signal. But I will clear it up and check it out.

I went to my local shop today.. He originally said "Its your LR switch, under the front rack" That apparently controls the reverse override. Then he realized I had a 2004 not the 2004.5 when looking up the part and stated that I dont have a LR switch.
He states, and this guy has been there foreever and is pretty good, that its either the switch itself (i hope) or the ECU control module. If its the ECU I guess im in trouble cause they are big bucks...
