i have a 2000 sportsman 500. when i first engage four wheel drive, when plowing, it works fine. after a while it disengages. if i turn off the 4wd switch for a while and then turn it back on, it will reengage. does anyone know what would cause this or has anyone had this problem?thanks, it makes it real tough to plow snow like this.

Have you reaised the whole 4wheeler up, with all four wheels/tires off the ground and tested the switch? Fronts will move when not in AWD, but if you hold them they will stop, in AWD you will not be able to stop them. AssUme the AWD light lights, when in AWD? How much hub fliud di dyou put in? Too much is just as bad as too little.

I would check the speedo sensor on the right front wheel, or the speedo itself, all the 4x4 stuff runs through the speedo. I had the same prob with my 2001 500ho and it was the speedo. Bad news is they run around $290 from the dealer. I found one on e-bay for $110, let me know if this helps.

Everett,
You can make a device to check the speed sensor for less than $6.00(This Makes Polaris Tool P/N 2871745). All you need is a 9v battery, a 680Ohm LED and a couple of feet of wire. Let me Know what your e-mail is and I can photo copy and send you the trouble shooting pages (about 4 pages) out of the service manual. These will be very helpful. They show all voltages you should read at the wheel speed sensor and at the back of the speedo. If I am unable to send them via e-mail I will send them via post office at no charge. My E-mail is Resposito@hvc.rr.com
