Default Polaris 700 rear CV and axle

I have a rear cv joint making some noise, after allowing the dealer to look at it he told me it would be about 400 plus dollars to replace it. He said it was cheaper to replace the entire axle as he did not know which joint was making the noise.

I am looking on Ebay now for a new one and like some of the prices there much better. I have never taken one off before so I am looking for some assistance from anyone who has replaced one of these. I would also appreciate any input as to any brand or what to look for.

you need to find which one is gone first. usually the boot is ripped or maybe the clamp came opff or loose. the cv man has some if you contact him. the joint depending on which one are fairly expensive.

I didn't see any rips or other damage in the boots. The $tealer said he could not see any damage either. It has 1652 miles on it and I was also curious if maybe wheel bearings could be making some of this noise. From my limited experience it sounded like the cv joint. When I make a hard left at slow speed, it comes from the right side. I need to spend a little more time to listening to it. I also went to the cv guys website. Tons of information there.

Be sure to check the wheel bearings first. If they are loose, try tightening them up first.

you should be able to pin point it better when you start looking and listening. jack up the wheels and turn them by hand to see if maybe the bearing is bad.

you might be able to hear it or even feel the resitance of the bearing eating away. if ita cv joint bad most of the time it clicks and changes sound while turning when differnt pressure is put on it.

If it is the bearings you can take them to your auto parts store and they usually have the same bearing, if you have good parts guys they can get u-joints also, havent had any luck with cv boots at parts store. The right side needes the brake taken off, the shock mount and upper and lower control arm bolts removed then the housing will come off the axle, by then you'll know whats wrong. Oh yea, take the tire off, lol.
