2007 Polaris Sportsman 2x 500 H.O. EFI
2007 Polaris Sportsman 2x 500, bought new in December, has about 30 hours and around 250 miles on it. It has always cranked right up and idled, but has died a couple of times on inclines and when turning sharp. But today I went through what turned out to be a Deep mudhole and pretty much had the thing on its left side in the water. I don't remember letting off the gas any until I got through the thing. Didn't think much about it, other than I was wet, until I slowed down a few minutes later and it died. It then wouldn't start back without giving it some gas. I checked the air filter and it was not wet. It will run now, but only with me giving it some throttle. I didn't take out the spark plug, I didn't see how water could have gotten to it really. Any ideas? I can't make it to the dealership until end of the week.

Sounds like a carb problem, but since yours is EFI that's not it. I always follow in order from spark to plug, then fuel to combustion chamber. You know you are getting a spark because it runs. The problem has to be in the delivery of the fuel. My first guess would be the fuel pump. Something is limiting the fuel getting to the combustion chamber, giving extra throttle is getting it through, the dieing while on a incline or while turning sharply also means a fuel flow problem. I would start from the fuel tank to the pump then to the combustion chamber looking for crimped lines. If all the lines are clear it must be the pump. Can you unhook the fuel line as close to the injector as you can get and turn the machine over to see if you have a steady fuel flow? This is how I would look for the problem on my Jeeps, I don't work much on quads. Good Luck

Howdy theBIRD.......mine did the same thing. Try adjusting the throttle cable that goes into the box with the AWD/2X4/Turf switch, above the thumb throttle feed. The rubber boot on the cable is a bear to move to expose the adjustment....try to warm the boot first.

I have an 07 500 EFI, the first time I got mine out of the truck after picking it up it wouldn't idle. After adjusting the cable a little it has been fine. What is the recommended idle speed? I'll have to look to see what mine idles at, I want to say its around 1150 RPMs to keep it running. A few turns of the cable adjuster and you should be set.

It's getting daylight here in Northeast Texas, so I'm going to pull the ATV around and maybe run a blow/hair dryer over that rubber boot a min, then slide it back and tighten/adjust the cable. I'm wanting to say that when mine idled by itself it was at about 1200-1400 (sounds high). If anyone does know the recommended idle RPMs that would be great to know, I don't want to have it idled too high. Thanks everyone! I only have a few minutes this morning to try it, but I'll holler back this afternoon.
