#1
My friend's sportsman 500 stalls out when he starts it, shortly after anyways.
He says the RPM's will fluctuate betrween 800-1200 and it stalls out, putters is the word he userd prior to it stalling out, anyone have any ideas?

Tell him to try adjusting the throttle cable tighter up near the the grip, if there's to much slack in the cable the machine will stall out on you. I also had a problem with my idle speed screw backing off due to vibration and the idle would drop way down and stall. Mine is carburated.

is it an efi or a carb.? if its a carb turn up the idle a little. shouls idle around 1100 rpms. make sure there is abput 1/8" play in the throttle.

If it is carb'd....check the Pilot Jet. Mine was clogged, could start, wouldn't idle but could rev' up and run fine...just wouldn't idle. The hole in the jet is so small that a standard sewing needle was too big to open the hole back up.
I have also seen a video from the nice folks at Cottonwood Motorsports in AZ that describes how a machine will die if there is too much slack in the throttle cable. The specs are between 1/8" and 1/4" play in the thumb throttle before it catches and rev's the engine. Good luck! I just got back from riding the 500. What a blast and the AWD....(grinning) just leaves the rest stuck in the mud!!!!
