Default 04 Sportsman 90

I have an 04 Sportsman 90 that i am working on for a buddys son. I have torn it down completely (not the engine), cleaned it up, replaced bearings, brakes . . . I have it back together and started it up. The resistor on it is really heating up, so much that smoke is coming off it. This can't be normal. The casing on one side of the resistor is cracked but in tact. Does anyone have any guidance for me?
