Default Clutch Questions

my 2001 sportsman has been creeping when idling. I checked the idle and it seems to be at a normal idle speed. I am assuming it is something in the clutch. I need to do a little more research, but if it is the clutch. Where is a good place to get one cheap? Is this something that I can do on my own, or am I going to need special tools for this. I am pretty comfortable tearing into things, but have never done any clutch work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

if its the ebs bushing thats gone bad it can be replaced but it requires special tools to pull the clutch apart.

ok. I have contacted a couple dealerships and both said it would probably be a good idea to replace the entire drive clutch instead of just the bushing if this is the problem. The cheapest I could find a new clutch for is about 320 online. Do you think this is necesary, or does that all depend on the shape of the clutch. I cant imagine it would be too wore. It only has just over 600 miles on it. I just bought this machine a month ago and my wife will be pissed if I have to stick 500 bucks into it already

Wow, if it was my machine, I wouldn't be that willing to pay for a WHOLE new clutch with just 600 miles on it. A dealership makes most of its money on parts and labor. The easy answer for them is what they gave you. It would be great for THEM if you agreeed to purchase the whole driven clutch assembly and then pay them another two hours labor to install it.

If it was mine, at a minimum I would pull the clutch (PVT) cover off and visually inspect the belt and clutch sheaves for proper alignment and/or signs of excessive wear. The best thing you can do for us to help you out more is to take some pictures and post them so we can see exactly what you're seeing.

Keep us posted.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I will take off the clutch cover and post some pics. Thanks for the input. I am hoping it isnt anything major. $72 bucks an hour for labor can break someone in a hurry. Thanks again.

sheep is right why would buy a whole clutch. before you take it off make sure to check to see if the engine mounts are bad. if the engine gets caulked off side ways it would creep. if there ok then pull the cover off and let us know from there.

I can't imagine your clutch being worn out! only 600 miles!
I'd check the motor mounts 1st. the one that breaks is the front mount right under the front of the engine. Stick a big prybar between the engine and frame and see if you can lift the engine and seperate the mount.
If so NAPA has an exact replacement that is very heavy duty.
