Ramps...
#21
I had an old set of folding steel ramps for a long time. They were rusted, but looked ok. I used them with my Honda 350.
One day loading my Honda, one of the ramps broke when I was half way up. The only thing that kept me from flipping over was the other ramp broke too.
I have no idea what the ramps were rated for, but I thought I was well under the weight limit.
Now that I have a heavier SP500, I built my own ramps from 2x12 and aluminum ramp ends. I also got some stair tread tape (sand paper with glue on the back) and put three strips on each ramp for traction.
I used a treated 16' board cut in half (better wood in a 16' board than 2 8').
I have an '07 GMC with a 5 1/2' box and a permanent tool box. When I back the wheeler into the bed, the front wheels hang over the end of the open tail gate by a couple of inches. I looks a little precarious, but it is secure.

Just a little physics for all u lil whisker snatchers out there...at no time do you ever have ALL the weight of yer bike on the tailgate at once..when driving it on ,the front of the bike is exerting force on the tail gate and the rear on the ramps and ground..then you break over and the rear weight is on the tailgate and front is in the truck..I have a 2500HD gmc 4x4 with recall replaced cables ,short bed and a tool box in the bed and my 96 sportsman 400 4x4 rests against the tool box and the rear wheels are on the bed/tailgate crack, Seems to be ok so far...you dont need to power load yerself up into the windshield..lol. You can also put a precut piece of 3/4 inch plywood in the bed if you have too much weight on the tailgate.

Ratings are for each ramp with all the weight in one spot on the ramp not spread out along the ramp..this is to cover the ramp mfgr's ****. This is for single ramps only..double or tri fold are rated on each lip that contacts the tailgate as they are the weakest parts.

I have a Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab and have a 07 polaris 800. I use the Moose bi-fold ramps and have never had an issue. Nice thing is the ramps are very light and slide perfectly under the quad. Due to the box size, the tailgate can not be shut but I use 2 straps to lift the tailgate as far as it can go. Check out www.mooseracing.com to see the ramps. P.S. Must use security straps

Hi there,,,,reading your profile and noticed the "05 ATP. I have an "04 ATP and having an issue with the carb. Are you familiar with the internals? Have you checked your valve clearance since you have had it.
I dumped mine accidentally (hehehe) kinda deeper than normally should and have had wierd issues with accelaration. Do you know of carb kits that are available?
Thanks /..
"07 popo 450 sportsman (wifes)....decked out
"04 popo 500 ATP HO...."all mine"..just replaced first clutch...ewww.>$$$.
Loookin for the fix on the carb....seems to be not getting enough air or gas. Have completely torn down and cleaned TWICE.....wondering about gaskets or diaphram...Looking for parts?????

I have a Dodge 3500 Short Bed and haul our two SP's around in its bed all the time. A few notes:
* I have the individual steel ramps. I really hate the hassle and risk of aligning them and making sure they don't slip off the tailgate (no safety chains). One time, after loading, I noticed that one of the ramps was holding onto the tailgate by less than an inch. That was a creepy feeling. I now use a strap on each one to hold them against the tailgate.
* I also have the trifold aluminum ramp. I must say I feel more secure using it versus the separate steel ramps. It flexes a bit but seems plenty strong. It has integral safety chains and I use them every time.
* The tailgate doesn't seem to have any problems holding up during loading and unloading. Steel cables are very strong; the weak point is likely the connections at the end, but those seem to be holding well.
* Once the ATV is in the bed, I position it so the rear wheels are sitting right on the rear lip of the bed. This keeps all of the weight on the bed and off the tailgate. Since I have a short bed, the tailgate remains down. Frankly, I don't think there would be a problem backing up the ATV a bit more so that its rear wheels were centered on the tailgate hinge... that would still not permit the tailgate to use leverage to hurt itself.
* I have had once case of "rear window blowout" [groan]. I had the SP700 in the bed but apparently didn't strap it in securely enough. Going down an extremely bumpy road the ATV shifted forward and blew out my rear window. Now I use four straps, one on each corner, and cinch them down very securely. No more problems.
