backfiring is from a lean condition, an intake leak or exhaust leak.
I'd double check around the intake and carb boot.

When I saw this condition on a carbed machine, it turned out that the float was set improperly. It was not letting enough fuel into the bowl, which starved the engine for fuel at higher throttle settings and yielded exactly the situation you describe. Perhaps you misadjusted the float while the carb was off?
