crank seal on a 400 xplorer

Does it run now?
If not you will need to take off the clutch and look at it closely.
If it does run, spray carb cleaner on the seal while running and listen for a rpm change.
It's very easy to change if you have a clutch puller(special tool)and a seal puller.

You can buy a seal puller at a auto Parts place.
(better yet rent or borrow one from autozone)
You can try the carb cleaner with the clutch on also.
Try choking it a little and see if that brings down the rpms also. It sounds like your a little lean for some reason.

i have always just used a small screw driver and drive inbetween the houseing and the seal..works every time , as long as you do not beat the heck out of it you should have no damage..i work on auto engines for a liveing and i use this method alot, half of the seal pullers they want you to use do not work worth a crap..just mt 2 cents i never claimed to be right, i just get-er-done!!!
