rpm limiter

it wil just flutter and sound like it is sucking air threw the carb wweird like when you breath in and out heavy on my old race car with the 600cc brigs engine on methanol overhead valves we twisted around 6100 some people were twisting 6700 but that is stupid we had ours put on a dino and the power dramaticly dropped at 5700 but that is a v twin on methanol. we didn't have a limeter on that just mag to coil to spark plug no cdi. we made teh rpms go up and down by changine the sproockets. twisting over teh limet that is set from teh factory is stupid unless you are racing it is just extra heat wear and tear. and if you do you better change your oil and filter frequently.

well, this is my first ATV and i have about 30 hours and 400 miles on it and i drive it in dusty consitions. should the air filter be replaced by now? i have taken it out and looked at it and the inside of the air filter is clean but the prefilter has one spot on it that is really dirty. i know for the prefilter just rinse it with water, but i dont know when to replace the filter. any help is appreciated.
thanks for all the input guys!

get a K&N then you can clean it over and over again for the rest of your life i have one on my scrambler never changed the jets and runs great. no jetting is needed. Ive heard of people that have blew out there paper ones 2 you probably can just don't get that close with the air gun because 120 psi could maby rip it.

ok, now is that when it should be replaced, or when dirt has gotten into the engine and its too late? i cant work on my atv and teardown the engine to fix it and all that.

i got that info from me when i was tuning my clutches and trying difernt set ups for rick ritter when he sent he differnt springs and dalton kits. i agree that the engine will start to cut out when it reaches the limiter. i used to have a zx-6 that tacted 14,000 rpms and bounced off the limiter alot lol.
i can tell you that 800's have a rev limiter. when you clutch is wrong you'll hit it w/ no problem lol. most engines these days have the limiters built into the cdi box i beleave so its not like you can change it. personally i wouldnt want to turn an engine that is suppose to max out at 6300 rpms and contuine to run it at 7300 w/ out some engine mods as it wont last as long as it should. imo.</end quote></div>
Sorry, I quoted you and meant to quote heller. I don't doubt your information on the limiter for the Sportsman is accurate.
Rick is the guy when it comes to Polaris. I told him my findings when running his recommendation for the clutch (along with 90% of forum members recommendation, too <black/wht primary, violet secondary> and he said the rpms I'm seeing is not a problem.
Where did you get that info? When I was interested I looked everywhere and asked many people what the limiter was..I was told by all, including my dealer..no limiter.</end quote></div></end quote></div>

they have a aftermarket high performance CDI module that raises the rev limiter 1000 rpms... not sure you would want all of that but they are selling them on e-bay... just search for polaris hawkeye and "buy now" it should come up...

Go ahead, disconnect the rev limiter, there is another way to tell max Rpm. If you hear lots of clunking and your wallet starts starts to throb, you've probably over rev'd it.
