how do you know if it is an h.o.</end quote></div>
In 98 the Scrambler got the high duration cam and larger 40mm carb while the Sportsman,s motor was left alone. In 2001 the Sportsmans had the Scamblers same cam and carb added so they called it a Sportsman 500 H.O. (High OutPut)
They don,t call a Scrambler a H.O because it alway was considered one.
Only in 97 when the 500 scrambler was first introduced did it have a regular 500 motor.

i have a 2001 scrambler and a sportsman engine but the carb on the engine is a 39mm from the sportsman so that meens my engine is prob from a diff year?</end quote></div>
The 500 only had a 34mm carb until 2000, in 2001 it had a 40mm carb. If it has a 39mm its a add on later maybe.
2000 vs 2001 specs

Outside visually its next to impossible to tell a 500 H.O from a non H.O 500 motor. Measure the carb throat from the air box would be the easiest.
