Default Hawkeye Oil Temp Gauge Install

Well I am about 1/2 way through the install of my oil temperature gauge. I have the sender mounted and the gauge mounted so now all I have to do is find the best way to route the wiring.

That will be a job for me and my boys tomorrow as they "helped" me do the first part of the install. They are 6 and 3. What a hoot!

If all goes well, I'll post some results and pics.

By all means post up some pics! I'm interested in the install myself.

Well, guys, success at last.

I got the gauge completed as you can see here:

It was not that difficult, you will need a 1/4 NPT male x 1/8 NPt female pipe bushing to install the sender. They are common and can be bought about anywhere. I got this one at Lowe's for less than $2.

Here's a pic of the sender installed:

I used a 2" hole saw to make the hole for the 52mm gauge. I used a Dremel to clean out the hole for a very tight fit.

Here's a pic from the side:

Here's a pic after 10 minutes of riding:

5 minutes later idling:

As you can see 225F is as hot as it got. It was about 75-80F ambient today.

I used a ton of Lexel brand silicone type sealer to seal the gauge up from water. hopefully that will work.

I appreciate any comments.

Gauge can be bought on Ebay for $15 delivered.

Thats beyond cool! Functional too! Nice work! I'd like to know the highest reading you get on a real hot day, but that should be it. My aircraft maxed out on oil temp at 105 'c and thats pretty close to what you reached. Probably won't get much higher.

Looks good. Only problem with mine is I've used that "port" to hook up the accessory oil cooler...bummer. Good to know that it never got higher than 225* though. I would guess mine might not even get that hot with the oil cooler.

You can change the color of the backlight with that button. that's all. It will change 7 different colors. My 6 year old likes it red, so I'll leave it red.

so, is measuring the oil temp just another way to prevent overheating, similar to measuring the engine head temp? i live in central FL, and it gets really hot, so i need some way to measure the temps so i dont overheat. does anyone know what the overheat temp is for the hawkeye 300?
and man, that is one awesome and pro job u did with that!
